2023 elections: Senate plots to make the use of card readers mandatory

A bill which aims to make the use of card readers mandatory in elections has scaled through the first reading in the Senate on Wednesday, April 21 2021.

Captioned: “Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021”, it was sponsored by Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (Osun Central).

The bill seeks to amend Section 47 of the Electoral Act by inserting a new section “47(2)”.

The new section seeks to change the period for accreditation and voting as well as provide for the compulsory use of card readers for accreditation.

The bill will make different time frames for accreditation and voting. Accreditation will begin by 8 am and round off by 1 pm.

If the bill is successful, accreditation will start before voting.
