Senator Tokunbo Abiru, the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District and immediate past Managing Director of Polaris Bank moved a motion recently on the floor of the Senate on the need for the Federal Government to urgently fix the roads linking Ikorodu to Sagamu and that of Itoikin.

He did a critical needs assessment of his constituency and discovered from the survey he carried out of the critical importance of the roads to his people.

There are many companies along the Ikorodu-Sagamu road like Lafarge, PZ and many metal fabrication companies. The fixing of the roads will greatly open up the place and lead to the concomitant increase in the employment opportunities for the members of his constituency. Senator Abiru is highly alarmed by the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria – one of the world’s highest at slightly over 33% and this will in no miniscule measure help in alleviating the scourge. The road was first done in 1960 and the drainages there have greatly eroded as there is immense population pressure on them.

The Ikorodu/Itoikin/Epe road was done in 1975 and commissioned by the then Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. The population of the inhabitants there has grown in leaps and bounds hence the need for an urgent Federal Government intervention on it. The road leads to the Dangote Refinery, the proposed Lagos Seaport and Ibeju Lekki. It has many schools there. The economic benefits of the rehabilitation of the road will be gargantuan as it will create employment opportunities since the residents there will be able to easily access the aforementioned job locations as well as improve the overall quality of life.

Every well meaning Nigerian both at home and in the Diaspora should be concerned about one of the current societal ills in Nigeria – the rising youth unemployment and Senator Abiru’s motion intervention is a step in the right direction for the redress of it. It is highly commendable and shows visionary leadership.

Let the media do its duty to follow through and ensure that the executive constructs the two link roads for a better life for the constituents and in the best interest of the nation.
