Former Anambra Governor, Willie Obiano Released From EFCC Detention, But Can't Travel Out Of The Country

Nigeria’s antigraft body, The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday evening , the 23rd of February 2023 released the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Willie Obiano, on bail.

THE VENT REPUBLIC reports that Obiano passport was seized as part of the conditions in the bail bond.It would be recalled that the immediate past Anambra chief-executive was arrested last week at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, as he was preparing to board a flight to Houston, the United States.

Obiano was reportedly arrested at about 8:30pm last week Thursday, few hours after he handed over the reins of government to Chukwuma Soludo.

THE VENT REPUBLIC reports that Obiano, who had been on the EFFC watchlist for a while now, was arrested over corruption allegations.

“Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including, N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash. Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state,” EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr Uwujaren told newsmen.
