The Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) has unveiled plans to establish two peer-reviewed academic journals aimed at advancing research, innovation, and policy in Africa’s maritime sector, ABUJAPRESS reports.
The new journals, African Journal of Offshore, Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture (AJOMENA) and the Journal of the Blue Economy & Sustainable Energy Development, are designed to provide scholarly platforms for collaboration among researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers. The initiative marks a significant step in building Africa’s maritime knowledge base and increasing the continent’s presence in global marine engineering research.
AJOMENA will focus on offshore engineering, marine engineering, naval architecture, and maritime technology, while the Blue Economy journal will explore maritime innovation, sustainable energy, ocean economy development, and related policy issues. Both journals aim to strengthen indigenous research capacity and foster knowledge sharing across Africa and beyond.
The official launch is scheduled for May 11, 2026, at the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ headquarters in Abuja. NIMENA National Chairman Eferebo I. Sylvanus described the journals as key tools for supporting policy development, driving innovation, and shaping sustainable strategies for Nigeria’s blue economy.
Industry leaders, researchers, and engineering professionals are expected to attend, highlighting the growing importance of research-driven solutions in Africa’s maritime and ocean economy sectors.
