The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding economic opportunities and improving living standards across Nigeria through increased access to reliable and sustainable electricity.The agency described rural electrification as more than an energy intervention, stressing that every mini-grid, solar home system and electrified public facility represents an investment in human capital, economic inclusion and community development.According to the agency, providing electricity to underserved communities can unlock opportunities for small businesses, improve educational outcomes, strengthen healthcare delivery and support agricultural productivity.
REA noted that the deployment of renewable energy solutions, particularly in areas with limited access to the national grid, is helping to bridge Nigeria’s electricity gap while creating pathways for economic participation among rural and underserved populations.The agency explained that mini-grids can provide communities and businesses with dependable electricity for productive activities, including processing, refrigeration, irrigation, retail operations and other small-scale enterprises.Beyond businesses, electrification of schools and health centres is also expected to contribute to improved social outcomes. Access to electricity can support digital learning, enhance healthcare services and enable health facilities to operate essential equipment more effectively.
Similarly, electrifying markets and farms can strengthen local economies by allowing traders and farmers to extend their productive hours, preserve agricultural produce and adopt technologies that improve efficiency and reduce losses.REA’s approach reflects a broader understanding of rural electrification as a tool for national development rather than simply an infrastructure project.
