Dozens of Iranian security personnel, including Basij militia members, were reportedly killed in a series of drone strikes across Tehran on Wednesday night, in what state-affiliated media described as a “mysterious overnight assault.”
The semiofficial Fars News Agency reported that explosions and clashes occurred at multiple checkpoints in the capital, killing at least 10 security operatives. However, other sources claim the casualties were far higher, with scores of Basij members reportedly wiped out within minutes at various locations.
A statement attributed to a “knowledgeable source” and carried by Fars described the attack as a coordinated operation involving Mossad and monarchist elements, intended to infiltrate the regime and sabotage its internal security. The source insisted that the operation would ultimately fail.
In response, Basij forces erected additional checkpoints across major Tehran streets to restrict civilian movement and prevent unrest. Analysts say the drone strikes appear aimed at demonstrating the vulnerability of Iran’s security apparatus while instilling fear among Basij operatives, potentially deterring them from acting against civilians in the future.
Ahead of the attacks, Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s former shah, urged supporters to stay home for safety while continuing acts of protest from their residences. In a recorded message, he encouraged citizens to sing loudly at night and strike work duties, warning regime forces that this was their final chance to side with the people instead of oppression.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the Iranian public, stating that Israel intended to empower citizens to “take their fate into their own hands” and suggesting that the right moment to act was approaching.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Israeli Defense Forces announced that dozens of Israeli fighter jets had carried out coordinated airstrikes against Iranian regime infrastructure, guided by intelligence operations. Key targets included an IRGC headquarters in central Tehran, internal security bases, Basij command centers, and intelligence offices. According to the military, personnel inside these sites were identified and neutralized within seconds during the strikes.
The attacks mark one of the most significant Israeli operations against Tehran in recent months, highlighting the escalating tensions and growing vulnerability of Iran’s domestic security forces.
