The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign from his ministerial position if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in Rivers State and the FCT.
Wike made the declaration while addressing members of the Apo Traders Association in Abuja, where he expressed confidence in his political influence in both locations, describing Rivers State as his home and Abuja as his place of work.
The minister stated that he would not accept a situation in which President Tinubu loses in both Rivers State and the FCT, stressing his commitment to ensuring the president secures electoral support in the two areas.
According to Wike, the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, and he intends to announce his resignation the following day if Tinubu fails to win in both locations.
“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor further emphasised the political significance of the two locations, noting that while Rivers remains his political home, Abuja is where he currently serves as a minister.
His declaration comes amid growing political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political leaders across the country positioning themselves for the forthcoming electoral contest.
Wike’s statement places particular emphasis on his commitment to President Tinubu’s re-election bid in Rivers State and the FCT, although the outcome of the election will ultimately depend on the decisions of voters.
The minister’s pledge to resign if the president loses in the two locations has also drawn attention to the political expectations surrounding his role in the administration as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
