Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said many Nigerian politicians fail to understand the changing mindset of young people, especially in the age of social media.Kwankwaso made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he spoke about the growing political awareness among Nigerian youths and their demand for credible leadership.
According to him, younger Nigerians are becoming less concerned about religious and ethnic sentiments often promoted by older politicians, focusing instead on competence and good governance. The former presidential candidate noted that many political leaders have little engagement with young people and are unaware of the realities shaping public opinion online.“So many things have changed in this country. You have leaders, many of whom don’t even realize what is happening on social media,” Kwankwaso said.
He explained that younger Nigerians now think differently from older generations and are more interested in leaders capable of solving the country’s pressing challenges.Kwankwaso also revealed that during the 2023 general election, even members of his own family encouraged political collaboration between him and Peter Obi.“You will be surprised, even during the 2023 election, in my own house, my own daughter was telling me to go and work with Peter Obi,” he said.According to him, the call for unity and collaboration among political figures reflects the desires of many young Nigerians who are seeking a better future for the country.
He added that while older politicians continue to focus on religion and ethnicity, the younger generation is more concerned about effective leadership and national development.“People are talking about religion. People are talking about ethnicity, especially those at our level and age, but the younger people are looking for the right leadership for this country. And I think they are absolutely right,” Kwankwaso stated.
