The Lagos State Government has provided fresh details on the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled to officially resume on April 25.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the clean-up exercise will take place on the last Saturday of every month, between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. During this period, movement across the state will be restricted to enable residents to clean their homes, immediate surroundings, and drainage frontages.
According to Wahab, the initiative is designed to promote a culture of environmental responsibility and improve public hygiene across the state.
“The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. There will be controlled movement statewide to allow residents carry out thorough cleaning of their residences and surroundings,” he said.
The announcement follows the programme’s symbolic launch on March 14 along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor, which served as a prelude to the full implementation.

Wahab explained that enforcement will be handled by a joint task force comprising officials from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and sanitation officers from local governments.
He noted that inspection teams would be deployed during and after the sanitation period to monitor compliance, warning that offenders would face penalties in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
To support waste management during the exercise, LAWMA will deploy intervention trucks to evacuate bagged refuse generated by residents.
In a bid to boost participation and community involvement, the state government also plans to introduce incentives. Awards will be given to the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and street, encouraging healthy competition among communities.
