Israel has claimed responsibility for the killing of a senior Iranian official, Ali Larijani, in an overnight airstrike, though Iranian authorities have yet to confirm his death.
According to Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, the strike targeted Larijani, who serves as secretary of Iran’s National Security Council.
The Israel Defense Forces also said the operation was part of a broader effort aimed at key figures within Iran’s leadership.
Israeli officials further stated that a separate strike killed Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Basij paramilitary force.
Both men were described as high-value targets linked to Iran’s security and military structure. In remarks released by his office, Katz said the two officials had been “eliminated” during the operation, using strong language to frame the strikes as a significant blow to Iran’s leadership.
However, independent verification remains limited, and Tehran has not issued an official statement confirming the deaths.
The reported killings come amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, with both sides exchanging missile and drone attacks in recent weeks.
The situation has heightened fears of a wider regional confrontation, as military operations increasingly focus on strategic and high-ranking targets.
Analysts say that if confirmed, Larijani’s death would mark one of the most significant losses within Iran’s political and security establishment during the current hostilities.
