New Zealand has introduced a new six month Graduate Work Visa while expanding access to its Post Study Work Visa, in a move aimed at improving employment pathways for international students.
The new short term visa, expected to take effect from late 2026, is designed for graduates who complete eligible qualifications but do not meet the requirements for a full post study work visa.
It allows holders to work for any employer for up to six months while searching for longer term opportunities. To qualify, applicants must complete a Level 5 to 7 programme, study full time for at least 24 weeks, and meet financial and health requirements.
They must also apply within three months after their student visa expires and cannot have previously held either visa.
The permit is strictly temporary, does not allow self employment, and cannot be renewed or used to sponsor family members.
The government is also expanding eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa to include graduates with Level 7 diplomas, provided the full programme is completed within the country.
Successful applicants may receive visas lasting up to one year, with broader benefits including the ability to bring dependents.
The reforms are part of a wider strategy to grow New Zealand’s international education sector and attract global talent, as authorities seek to increase student numbers and strengthen the country’s position as a leading study destination.
