Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari revealed to Nigerians in an exclusive interview with Arise News that he won’t tell the public when the ban on Twitter will be lifted.

Buhari when quizzed on when Twitter ban would be lifted, declined to comment, saying he would “keep” the answer to himself.

He said:

“I will keep that to myself.”

Twitter was suspended on June 4 for an indefinite period of time amidst scathing criticism from many Nigerians and a cross section of the international community.

Former US President, Donald Trump however is in support of the ban and regretted not taking a similar action when he was still in office. Many Nigerians have bypassed the ban with the use of virtual private networks (VPN) to which the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami responded that people using the VPN will be arrested and prosecuted to which many Nigerians including the General Overseers of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and General Overseer of Deeper Life Church, Pastor William Kumuyi defied the ban by saying that their churches will continue to tweet as the ban was a violation of their fundamental human rights.

The Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed said he is currently in talks with Twitter and that the micro blogging site as well as Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram will have to be licensed by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) before they can continue their operations as they are making billions of dollars annually without paying a dime as tax to the Federal Government.
